What Happens During a Root Canal Procedure

A root canal treatment is a procedure that removes the infected or damaged pulp from your tooth. The pulp is the soft tissue inside your tooth containing nerves and blood vessels. First, a dentist will numb the area around your tooth. Then, they’ll use a small drill to create an opening in your tooth so that they can access the pulp. Next, they’ll remove the damaged or infected pulp from your tooth. Once the pulp is gone, the dentist will clean and seal the inside of your tooth. Finally, they will place a crown or filling on your tooth to restore it to its normal shape and function.

The procedure is generally not painful, but you may feel pressure and discomfort during the treatment. After the root canal treatment, you may feel some continued discomfort and sensitivity in the area. That is normal and should go away within a few days. However, if the pain persists, be sure to contact a dentist. Root canal treatment is a common and safe procedure that can save your tooth from extraction. With proper care, your treated tooth can last a lifetime.

Types of Root Canal Services

Different types of root canal services are available to you, and depending on your individual needs, a dentist will discuss with you what options you have or what’s best for you. Some of the most common services include:

  • Root canal therapy – The most common type of root canal service. It involves cleaning out the infected or damaged pulp inside the tooth and then sealing it to prevent further damage.
  • Apicectomy – This is a more invasive type of root canal service. It requires removing the entire tip of the tooth root. This service usually happens when traditional root canal therapy fails, or the infection is severe.
  • Endodontic surgery – This is the last resort type of root canal service. It involves surgically removing the infected or damaged pulp from inside the tooth. This service only happens if other treatments have failed and the infection is severe.
  • Retreatment of previous root canals – This option is often necessary if a prior root canal treatment was unsuccessful or the infection has returned. It requires cleaning out the root canal again and sealing it to prevent further damage.
