Dermal Fillers & Injectables

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers, or soft tissue fillers, are a type of minimally invasive aesthetic injection used to restore volume, fill in deep wrinkles, and improve the contours of the face. Hyaluronic acid, the primary ingredient of dermal fillers, is a compound that occurs naturally in the human body, aiding in the lubrication of joints and eyes, as well as moisturizing the skin. However, production of hyaluronic acid diminishes with age and can lead to tell tale signs of aging. Dermal fillers enhance the appearance of skin by returning this lost volume and minimizing the appearance of wrinkles, and fine lines, and reversing hollow facial contours. Dermal fillers are quite popular because of their immediate results with little to no downtime and relatively few side effects.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

There are an assortment of dermal filler brands available today, used for different areas of the face or different applications. While they differ in their mechanism of action, most of them employ hyaluronic acid, which also naturally occurs in the body. Hyaluronic acid in these injections give fillers a natural plumbing affect which serves to fill in your wrinkls and restore volume to area of your face where you have lost it. Some types of dermal fillers actually trigger fresh production of collagen and elastin, which also helps your skin to regain its natural elasticity.

Commonly Asked Questions

What type of dermal fillers do you use?

We use a variety of fillers depending on the application.  Some products we use include Juvederm Ultra XC, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, and Revanesse Versa+.

How do dermal fillers compare to Botox and Xeomin?

It is difficult to compare because dermal fillers are often used in conjunction with Botox and Xeomin for different indications to give the desired result.  Fillers add volume to smooth lines and enhance contours, whereas Botox relaxes tiny muscles to smooth expression lines.  Both are very safe, popular, and effective, and we often use both together for complete facial rejuvenation.

How long do fillers last?

There are many different kinds of fillers, most can last between 9 months and 2 years or more, depending on the type of filler and the treatment area.  Patients that are diligent with follow-up and touch-up appointments can often prolong the longevity of their results.

What are the risks of dermal fillers?

Side effects of dermal fillers are usually mild and can range from redness, bruising, tenderness or swelling.  Although exceedingly rare, infection is always a possibility.

Are dermal filler injections painful?

Many patients often describe the filler injection to feel like a quick pinch, only causing minimal discomfort.  We offer a topical anesthetic to ease any nerves before receiving dermal fillers, additionally many dermal fillers contain the mild anesthetic of lidocaine, meaning most patients feel little to no pain.  We will do our best to guide you through your first dermal filler treatments and ensure you are as comfortable as possible!
